La société est le reflet de l'école, mais l'école est à l'image de la société. Si l'éducation d'un enfant se fait surtout dans et par la famille - cela est toujours reconnu - il n'en reste pas moins que l'empreinte la plus forte nous vient souvent de tel ou telle instituteur (trice).

"The first schoolhouse in Potton was erected in 1807, where Fred Korman's house in now, and at Meig's Corner, ln 1809". "As an evidence of the interest taken in education by the settlers in Potton, E.C. Barnett, a great grandson of Colonel Ruiter, calls our attention to a copy of a Petition in his possession addressed to Sir Gordon Drummond, Administrator-in-Chief in and over the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada as follows: "Your petitioners, inhabitants of the Township of Potton, pray your excellency may be pleased to grant them a charter for erecting a schoolhouse in this township agreeable to His Majesty's liberal and gratuitous assent the 12th of August, 1802, and your petitioners shall ever pray as in duty bound.

" Henry Ruiter, Lt-Col. James Poison, late Capt. of Militia; Abraham Ruiter Lt; Militia; Herny Ruiter, Jr, Shuborel Dinivick, Gideon Bartlett, Benj. Barnett, Daniel Jones, David Heathe, Ensign Militia; John Barnett, Robert Barnett, Purkins Pyke, Philip Ruiter, Jr, Henry Abal X his mark, Henry Abal, Jr, Samuel Tarrabet, Nicholson Warner," On the back of this petition appears a commission to be engrossed appointing "Henry Ruiter, James Poison and Purkins Pyke to be a syndicate for the erection of a schoolhouse in Potton.

Entre 1810 et 1820, Potton s'enrichit d'une cinquantaine de demeures, ce qui nécessite de nouvelles écoles, entre autre celle de West Potton ou Dunkin N° 1, située sur le petit chemin derrière l'ancien magasin de Robert Marcoux, et celle de South Hill ou Mansonville Station maintenant Highwater (N° 7.) The third schoolhouse Sweat N° 3 would have been erected around 1840 in Knowlton's Landing. Two brothers Luke and Henry Knowlton would teach each a term in the sixties. This schoolhouse also served as a church.

Si le chemin entre North Potton et Bolton fut aménagé en 1830, on peut déduire que c'est vers ce temps-là que l'école Blanchard fut ouverte, et eu pendant de longues années une large assistance, puis fut fermée, puis remise à la Commission Scolaire Catholique. C'est très probablement l'endroit de la maison de Leslie Fidler, actuellement.

En 1825, quelques jeunes voulant continuer leurs études, on bâtit un High School. We know that a young Baptist student, Gardner Bartlett taught in this High School in 1826 and for a few years; after 6 years eventually, the High School had its last session.

Stuart Grant's house used to be Jones' or Vale Perkins Schoolhouse and it must go that far back.

Au village, l'école N° 5 s'ouvrait vers les 1825 sous l'impulsion de Robert Manson. Plus tard, elle s'appellera lntermediate School, parce qu'en plus de l'Élémentaire, on dispensera des cours jusqu'en 9ième et 10ième année.

Une autre école était localisée "Between Mansonville Station Highwater and North Troy line, N° 15." It must have been there a long time, because in 1889 it was in ruins.

Encore la Sugar Loaf, la Branch, la Oueen's Highway School, la Maxfield ou celle de Leadville.

Toutes ces écoles - il y en eut 18, à un moment donné selon l'inspecteur Ernest M. Taylor - étaient protestantes. Lorsque vers les 1860, des familles catholiques firent leur apparition, quelques-unes passèrent aux mains des catholiques, par ex: l'école Blanchard, vers les 1890 et l'école Sugar Loaf, avant 1889.

Most of these schoolhouses were named for families living near, such as Garland, Blanchard, Jones, Magoon, Gordon, Leonard and so on.
