Lake Memphremagog’s beauty drew masses of tourists; and crossing her expansive waters made boating an essential and much sought after experience.
Copp’s ferry followed by the Hay-eater, offered Lake crossings between Georgeville and Knowlton’s Landing well before the advent of steamships, who then plied the full length and breadth of Memphremagog.

Le premier vapeur à faire son apparition sur le Memphré-magog est le Mountain Maid, en septembre 1850.
Le Lady of the Lake est lancé en 1867, commande du magnat du transport, Sir Hugh Allen. Destiné au transport des voyageurs, ce bateau marque l’histoire du lac Memphrémagog.
Doté d’une coque d’environ 50 mètres (165 pi) de longueur, faite de fer massif, ce vapeur, muni de 2 roues à aubes et d’un moteur puissant, a une capacité de 350 tonneaux et peut accueillir 1200 personnes.

The first of these was the Mountain Maid,
in September of 1850.
The Lady of the Lake, a passenger steamship, commissioned by travel magnate Sir Hugh Allen,
was launched in 1867.
She boasted a 165 foot steel hull (50 m) and twin paddle wheels, in addition to a powerful engine. Her capacity was 350 tonnes and she could, and evidently did, carry up to 1200 passengers.
