Le mot du doyen
Nous voilà en 2024, à l’aube des 35 ans de l’Association du patrimoine de Potton. Membre de l’Association depuis 1991, je peux revendiquer le statut de doyen « vivant », jetant un juste regard sur les réalisations de l’Association.
Au moment où je publie une nouvelle mise en page de l’édition numérique Potton d’antan | Yesterdays of Potton, je constate à quel point cet ouvrage a été la source des nombreuses publications de l’Association. Une collection totalisant 135 photos, des récits et des notes historiques ont ainsi alimenté des brochures, des dépliants et des expositions. Le récent BaladoDécouverte | Circuit historique de Potton a également exploité ces sources.
Il faut reconnaître ce travail de « pionniers » que les auteurs Gérard Leduc et Paul Rouillard, assistés de Jean Soumis et de Peter Downman ont su faire pour susciter de l’intérêt et promouvoir le patrimoine local du canton.
Ce faisant, je pense en quels termes, Jean Therriault, ex-président de la Société d’histoire de Sherbrooke, résumait l’oeuvre du regretté Jean-Pierre Kesteman, décédé en 2016 : « C’est un étranger qui est venu ici nous raconter notre ville et notre région comme personne d’autre ne pouvait le faire. »
Pourrions-nous ainsi qualifier les auteurs de Potton d'antan | Yesterdays of Potton?
En 2012, l’historien Kesteman prononçait la conférence d’ouverture au congrès de la Fédération Histoire Québec tenu à Sherbrooke: « Séjourner et repartir, Mobilité géographique, rééquilibrages sociaux et culturels dans une région du Québec | Le cas des Cantons-de-l’Est ».
Je me suis inspiré de ce titre pour rendre hommage à trois acteurs de l’Association tout en espérant qu’une relève puisse « séjourner avant de repartir »

A word from the doyen
Here we are in 2024, on the eve of Potton Heritage Association's 35th anniversary. As a loyal and experienced member of the Association since 1991, I believe that I can justly claim the status of a "living" doyen, in looking fairly at the Association's achievements.
As I publish a new layout of the digital edition of Potton d'antan | Yesterdays of Potton, I realize just how much this work has been the primary resource of the Association's many publications. A collection of 135 photos, stories and historical notes have been used in brochures, pamphlets and exhibitions. The recently published BaladoDiscovery | Potton Historical Tour also drew on these sources.
We must sincerely acknowledge the pioneering work of authors Gérard Leduc and Paul Rouillard, assisted by Jean Soumis and Peter Downman to generate interest in and promotion of our township's local heritage.
In doing so, I'm reminded of the words used by Jean Therriault, former president of the Sherbrooke Historical Society, to summarize up the work of the late Jean-Pierre Kesteman, who passed away in 2016: "He was a stranger who came to tell us about our city and our region as no one else could do."
The same may easily be said of the authors of Potton d'antan | Yesterdays of Potton.
In 2012, historian Kesteman delivered the opening lecture at the Fédération Histoire Québec conference in Sherbrooke, the title of which may be translated as: "To travel to and then leave: geographical mobility, social and cultural rebalancing in one region of Québec: The Case of the Eastern Townships".
These words have inspired me to pay tribute to three of our Association’s key players, in the hope that succeeding generations will “sojourn before leaving” …
