Monastère russe, Cimetière du

Contenu

The Russian Orthodox Cemetery is found next to the Church, built between 1974 and 1980 on the grounds of the Monastery complex.  The small Cemetery is neatly fenced and, when I last saw it, well groomed.  The graves are marked with the distinctive Byzantine cross, which is a three barred-cross in which the short top bar represents the inscription over Jesus' head, and the lowest, usually slanting short bar placed near the foot, represents the footrest (suppedaneum) at His crucifixion.  Various interpretations for this slant may be found.  Most common is the allusion that it points to heaven and hell, suggesting perhaps the consequences of good and evil.  Inscriptions here are in Cyrillic, and some graves are marked with votive lanterns of significance to the faith.  Please show appropriate respect if you visit the site.

Dénommé aussi Russian Orthodox Cemetery, ce cimetière important se situe à l’ombre du monastère russe orthodoxe construit entre 1974 et 1980.[1]
