Marion-Atwell, Rue
Contenu
It is appropriate that Marion-Atwell Street leads to the English elementary school, in Mansonville. Thus is perpetuated the memory of a lady who taught for so many years in Mansonville. Miss Marion Atwell was born in 1897 and died in 1980, at 84 years, having lived the greater share of her life in Mansonville, teaching generation after generation. Her father was Volney Atwell, who also lived in Potton. Miss Atwell was educated at Macdonald College, in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. She was the first Worthy Matron of the Owl's Head Chapter # 39 of the Order of the Eastern Star, of which she was a founding member.[1]
Started in the mid 1800's, the Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization for men and women in the world, with some two million members worldwide. Membership is open to women who are related to Master Masons. The moral and social purposes of the order are designed to build character, to promote friendship and harmony among members, and to practice charity.

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can join. It was established in 1850 by Rob Morris, a lawyer and educator from Boston, Massachusetts who had been an official with the Freemasons. It is based on teachings from the Bible but is open to people of all monotheistic faiths. It has approximately 10,000 chapters in twenty countries and approximately one million members under its General Grand Chapter. Members of the Order are aged 18 and older; men must be Master Masons and women must have specific relationships with Masons. Originally, a woman would have to be the daughter, widow, wife, sister, or mother of a master Mason, but the Order now allows other relatives as well as allowing Rainbow Girls and Job's Daughters to become members when they become of age.[2]
