Leadville, Cimetière

Contenu

Situated near the Vermont border, on Chemin de Leadville, at its intersection with Chemin des Parulines, this is another of the older cemeteries in Potton, dating from around 1850.  It is the final resting place of some Potton families who lived in the area, notably the Brown and Magoon families.  The first in the Brown family appears to be John (1830-1902) and wife, Jane Hitchcock Brown (1824-1908).  Scott Brown, a descendant, taught school locally and retained the family's farm, before he, too, found eternal rest in 1998 with his wife, Jean.  His sister, Kathleen, married Benjamin Barnett and lived in Highwater all her married life.  This cheery, diminutive lady was well loved by all who knew her in Potton.

Being so close to the border, some American families are also represented in the gravesites, as may be witnessed by the several tiny American flags which are placed there around Memorial Day each year.  The Maxfield family, a well-known name in Vermont, is represented here, and in fact, Leadville cemetery is often called the Maxfield Cemetery.

Of the readable stones there, 1843 appears to be the earliest date, and 2002 is the most recent.  The oldest grave markers are silent reminders of lives and times far more difficult than our own.  The D & L. Stickney family buried three infant sons and their two-year old daughter between 1844 and 1847, a ten-year old daughter in 1873 and another son in that same decade.  If these were children of a single family, one wonders if the heartache was not too much to bear and that they moved from the area, for it does not appear older family members are buried here.  This, of course, is pure speculation.

Situé à la frontière du Vermont, sur le Chemin Leadville, ce cimetière acceuillait les habitant du hameau vers les années 1850.[1]
