Harry-George, Chemin

Contenu

This road is named for Harry H. George (1894–1978).  He was a younger brother to Claude George for whom the companion road is named.  It is located off Chemin du Lac and leads to private homes along the lakeshore.  Harry George was a direct descendant of Moses George, whom you may have read about earlier, and under the description for Claude-George Road.

Harry George married Ethel E. Magoon, daughter of Ernest A. Magoon and Mary Ann Young from Vale Perkins, and together had two children: Ethel Pauline, who still lives on the family farm and was a beloved elementary school teacher in Mansonville for many years; and one son, Ralph Harold, who married and had five children.

Harry George was municipal councillor from 1931 to 1933, property assessor from 1948 to 1956; and Mayor of this municipality from 1956 to 1960.  He was also Chairman of the Potton School Board.

A picture taken around 1912 of Ethel Magoon is depicted on the front cover of Potton d'antan, Yesterdays of Potton.  She is the young lady dressed in white, first on the left.  The others in the picture are Victoria Côté and Blanche Davis, both of whom lived in the Owl's Head area.  A picture of Ernest A. Magoon, Ethel's father, is shown on Plate # 52 of Potton d'antan, Yesterdays of Potton.

Nommé ainsi en souvenir de Monsieur Harry George, père de Ralf George, maire de Potton de 1956 à 1960.[1]
