Giroux, Maison

Contenu

J. Alfred Giroux bought the house situated at 301, rue Principale from Archie Gilman in 1918.  The building had housed a hotel in the early 1900's.  It is a fine example of the traditional Northern New England style of home.  This well-maintained building possesses undeniable architectural characteristics and overall interest.  It has been a Giroux family home for nearly a century and is now the home of Daniel Giroux, his wife and young family.  The contribution of generations of the Giroux family to the economic and cultural development of Potton has been considerable and sustained.

J.A. Giroux was this Municipality's first French mother tongue Mayor (1927-1930), thus beginning the unwritten practice of alternating terms of English and French speaking mayors, which persisted for years in Potton, and in fact was a practice common in many of the Eastern townships.  J.A. Giroux was our mayor from 1927-1930.  With Secretary-Treasurer R. F. Cowan, members of his Council in 1936 were Guy A. George, Dan N. Jones, Fred H. Perkins, F.A. Jewett, George O. Newell and Alphonse Rouillard.[1] Pierre Giroux was a municipal councillor in the 1980's.

Joseph Alfred Giroux (1882-1944) is resting in the Saint-Cajetan Cemetery, along with his wife, Georgianne Thibodeau (1891-1961).

This building has strong heritage value, according to its classification by Claude Bergeron, who was commissioned by the Municipal Council to evaluate the buildings within the urban perimeter of Mansonville.  (The classification considers only the historical value with no particular weighting as to authenticity.)
