George-R.-Jewett, Chemin
Contenu
Before 1991, most called this road either “ the Lake » or “ Perkins Landing road », in reference to the wharf at Perkins Landing. In 1991, it was decided to name it Chemin George-R.-Jewett. Many of the Jewett name live in and around Vale Perkins.
George Rexford Jewett was born March 24, 1837, great-grandson of John and Hannah Jewett, from Stratham, N.H. who came to the east side of the lake in Stanstead County around 1798. “ The Lake Shore settlement – East side was begun in the year 1800 by the Merrill, Jewett, Baird, Dailey, Peasley, Geer and Brown families »[1]. However, that date is disputed by the following: “ (David Jewett) is listed as being of Stanstead County, Quebec on October 28, 1799, where he was one of the founders of the Baptist Church.[2] » George R. Jewett was grandson of David Jewett's brother, Nathaniel. David and Nathaniel arrived in Stanstead County together.
When the Jewett family migrated to Potton from Stanstead is lost to history, but it appears that George Rexford Jewett was the first.
In 1857, George R. Jewett married Jane Allen (1841-1881), from Potton, and they had nine children. Mother and infant son died October 12, 1881 and rest in the Jones Cemetery of Vale Perkins. George R. re-married in 1883 to Mrs. Jane S. George, also of Potton. George R. Jewett died in Jay, Vermont on April 23, 1921, and is interred in the Jones Cemetery in Vale Perkins. All of the Jewetts in Potton are his direct descendants.
