Étang du Mont-Éléphant
Contenu
This pond is situated to the south of Sargent's Bay, to the west of Lake Memphremagog, off Chemin des Faucons-Pèlerins. Although a small kayak or canoe may be used on the pond, it is impossible to walk around this body of water for it is a swamp. Although the pond is not threatened on the short term, this site is judged worthy of conservation and has already been designated as a “ muskrat habitat ». A large variety of aquatic, wetland and forest plants are to be found there. Spiny hornwort, a plant likely to be designated as threatened or vulnerable grows there, as does the blue-flag iris (Iris versicolor), designated as Quebec's floral emblem in 1998. The small Northern ring-necked snake, a species rare to Quebec lives in proximity. The morphological characteristics of the pond are not favorable for nesting wildfowl, but Swamp sparrows and Red-winged blackbirds may nest there. A Red-tailed Hawk, a bird of prey, was sighted. The site offers a natural setting to eventual visitors, but access by canoe requires a portage through dense underbrush.[1]
