Da Silva, Château*

Contenu

A little heard of place bore the prestigious name of Château da Silva as a summer resort hotel built in the late 1870's (…) on the west slope next to the shore of Lake Memphremagog, about three miles north of Perkins Landing.''  The Belden map of 1881 names the location as Revere House, a hotel with a wharf”[1].  The designation of Revere house is likely in reference to the fact that the place was once called “Revere Clearing”, the origins of that name now forgotten, although there may be a connection with the Revere family who once lived in the area of Peabody Road, in and around 1864.

The Château da Silva resort was completely destroyed by fire in April of 1882 and not rebuilt.  Since it was located at shore level, the place would have been visible only from the opposite or east shore of Lake Memphremagog, whose residents could only watch helplessly, as the ice at that time of year would have been too unsafe to cross.  There are no known photographs of the place.  We do know it was situated in the same bay as the former Camping Ruisseau Château, which has since been converted to a three-seasons privately owned development without public access to the Lake, called Domaine Château Ruisseau.
