Coop, Moulin de la*

Contenu

This area, at the foot of Mill Street on the Missisquoi River, is where the Co-op Mill once stood. Built in 1803 by Lewis and Chandler, first proprietors of land in Mansonville, the original sawmill was bought by Robert Manson, who rebuilt it.  It is thought that the first Manson mill was eventually acquired by Harold Sullivan, who operated a feed store, and later sold to the Coopérative agricole de Waterloo, founded 1944; however some documents show that the original Manson mill was located to the south of the bridge.  Who is to confirm or deny that now?  Other mills were also located on the river at this place, the foundations of which are still visible.  Many of these were lost to the devastating flood of 1927.

The Co-op mill sold grains, seeds and other farm necessities.  In 1982, Gaston Laramée was the Co-op's manager; Raymond Rouillard, its trucker; and Théodore Privé, its clerk.  The Co-op closed in 1990 after which time Pierre Giroux acquired the building.  The venerable old mill was destroyed by fire in 2000.
