Cooledge, Chemin

Contenu

This road, named by the Municipality of Austin and the Municipality of East Bolton, is the municipal division between the two.  Territory on the upper side of Cooledge Road falls to the East Bolton jurisdiction whereas land lying to the east belongs to the territory of Austin.  Unfortunately it is misspelled on the signs.  It should read Coolidge for the surname of the man after whom it is named.

At the junction of Cooledge and Mountain Roads, is the former Coolidge Schoolhouse, built in the 1830's and the oldest of record in East Bolton.  Children from Knowlton Landing and Austin attended this one room school.  Both the school and the road were named after an early settler, Captain Eliot Coolidge, who was Levi Knowlton's son-in-law. Eliot and Polly (Knowlton) Coolidge had no children of their own; however they adopted three.  They gave these children a good education for the time, hence the recognition of both school and road name is entirely fitting.  His wife, Polly, and daughter, Eliza Dimond, were well loved as teachers locally.  Eliot Coolidge died in 1859.[1]

More history is also provided under the heading Knowlton Landing.
