Alfred-DesRochers, CLSC

Contenu

(Now known as the point de service of the Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Memphrémagog)

This building was erected in 2008, to replace the venerable old Canadian Legion building, which was not considered a good candidate for efficient retrofitting to current standards.  The Centre local de services communautaires (CLSC) is now known as Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Memphrémagog, point de service de Mansonville.  It is no longer defined as CLSC Alfred-DesRochers, although a commemorative plaque in honour of Alfred DesRochers hangs in the interior.  The same building also houses the Missisquoi North Volunteer Center.  The CLSC in Mansonville was opened in March of 1992; however, it has been located in the new building since 2009.

Alfred DesRochers (1901-1978), for whom the CLSC was originally named, was born in St. Elie d'Orford.  As a journalist, translator, poet and critic, he was an important figure in Quebec literature.  L'Offrande aux vierges folles brought his name to the fore in 1928, but it was his 1929 work called À l'ombre de l'Orford that made him the poet-laureate of Quebec.  In 1932, Alfred DesRochers won the Prix David, which honours an author for the totality of his work.  In 1964, it was the collection of his poems called Le Retour de Titus, published in 1963, which won him the prestigious Prix Duvernay.[1]

[1] The Canadian Encyclopedia
