The name originally proposed for this road was Chemin de la Luzerne, which in English would be translated to Alfalfa Road! Such a name would have then ignored the historical significance pointed out by the Burbank relatives, who opposed the new name.

That “Colonel” William Burbank was a military man cannot be confirmed, according to Connie Burbank, great-granddaughter of James Burbank, William's grandson. William Burbank was born in 1807 in Barnet, Vermont. In 1830, he married Sarah Drew, born in 1808 in Potton. Her father Enoch Drew had petitioned for land in Lower Canada in the years 1792-1797, with evident success (though undocumented in the present text). In the 1840's, three of the Burbank children were enrolled in the North Troy school district. In the Potton census of 1861, William Burbank is listed as a farmer with a wife and eight children. His wife, Sarah “Sally” Drew, died in Knowlton Landing in 1885; after which William moved to Georgeville to live with daughter, Frances. He died there on December 10, 1886.

Volume I of Beautiful Waters by William Bryant Bullock (1926) contains an engaging little anecdote about Colonel William Burbank, which you might read!

Cette appellation a été préférée à celle de Chemin de la Luzerne à la suite d’une demande de Ormonde E. Schoolcraft et de Donald Hanna formulée à la Municipalité le 7 août 1990. Madame Schoolcraft est une descendante du Colonel William Burbank et demeure sur ces lieux légués par ses ancêtres. Le chemin a été construit à l’origine par le Colonel.^[1]

Cet odonyme reprend le nom du premier membre de la famille Burbank à vivre dans cette localité^[2]

Il s’agit du Colonel William Burbank (1805-1885). Elisabeth H. Burbank (1845-1920) enterrée au Cimetière Ruiter semble la seule de cette famille qui repose dans le Canton de Potton.^[3]
