Sugar Loaf Pond, Hameau de
Contenu
In 1867, a publication entitled Burt's Illustrated Guide to the Connecticut Valley, essentially a tourist handbook, spoke of Concert Pond (Sugar Loaf Pond) as “ a favourite place for tourists » due to an abundance “ of brook trout. » These “tourists” were likely visitors from the inns in Knowlton Landing and environs, since no records show that inns were established on Sugar Loaf Pond itself. The Walling Map of 1864 shows few proprietors clustered at the northern extremity of Potton, however, none in proximity to the Pond. Seventeen years later, an 1881 map of Potton shows a small settlement on its western shore. It is presumed that these were newly installed farming families, of which the Brulotte family remains today. Certainly the past orientation of the Sugar Loaf Pond area has been more toward seasonal residency, a trend which has been reversed in recent times. A significant number of permanent homes are located in this picturesque hamlet.
