When the process of naming “unnamed” roads began, this one was to be called des Étourneaux, or Starling Road.  In July 1990, Mr. Jacob Kalff, then President of the Association of property owners along Smart Road, petitioned the Municipality to maintain the traditional name of Smart Road.  In the 1940's and 50's, George Smart and family, who lived in Vale Perkins, owned several modest one-room cottages which were advertised in Montreal papers and rented on a weekly basis during the summer months.  These cottages were located on what we now call Chemin Smart.  George brought provisions daily to his tenants, many of whom were introduced to our Township through staying in these tiny vacation cottages on Lake Memphremagog.
