Sargent, Chemin

Contenu

When researching about the Sargent family – this reference to “Sargent Hill Road” was found – “This road leads off to the left from the Ruiter Brook Road, right in the village and winds Northwesterly a few miles, but ends nowhere.”[1]  A notation which is somewhat amusing but very unflattering.  What was meant is that the road has no outlet.  The same article goes on to say that “It is interesting to note that in the Cemetery (Ruiter's Settlement Cemetery) is the gravestone of Ezra Sargent born in 1777 and died in 1837, which means this family settled in here probably well before the date of his death.”  The Ruiter's Settlement cemetery is the final resting place for over 50 of the Sargent family.  It appears that Ezra Sargent, who died in 1837, is the first of the Sargent family to be interred there.  Many Sargent family descendants still live in Potton.  It is one of Potton's oldest names and in many cases with close connection to the Ruiter name.
