This is Round Island in Lake Memphremagog. It is unmistakeable and well named! Round Island contains roughly 10 acres. It is mostly tree covered and located not far from the base of Owl's Head Mountain, and the site of the “ Mountain House ». Its shape and location provides a natural navigation aide to the boater.
The French language gives several meaning for the word ronde, or round. In addition to serving a primary purpose as adjective describing a cylindrical, spherical or circular form, ronde is also used as a noun. It may be a cut of beef, a musical note, an inspection or scheduled surveillance visit made by guards, police officers, or the military to make sure all is well. It may also be a dance where the dancers form a circle and hold hands. From 1535, Jacques Cartier began using the term to identify a group of islands. In today's topographical terms, it is used to describe islands, hills, bays and roads.
La langue française accorde plusieurs significations au mot « ronde ». Adjectif, il qualifie un objet dont la forme se veut sphérique, circulaire, cylindrique (île ronde, table ronde, autres). Il s'agit vraisemblablement du sens le plus utilisé. Comme nom, il désigne notamment un morceau de bœuf, une note de musique, une visite d'inspection ou de surveillance effectuée par des gardiens, des policiers ou des militaires afin de s'assurer que tout va bien, une danse dans laquelle les participants forment un cercle en se tenant par la main. Dès 1535, l'explorateur Jacques Cartier amorça l'utilisation du terme « ronde » en toponymie québécoise, identifiant ainsi un groupe d'îles. Aujourd'hui, plusieurs entités géographiques - notamment des îles, des collines, des baies et des voies de communication - portent ce nom. [1]
