Orcutt, Cimetière
Contenu
This abandoned cemetery is actually called the Orcutt Burying Ground, and is situated on land once owned by Lemuel Orcutt [1770-1850]. Five gravestones lie in disarray on a little knoll beside the Missisquoi River, opposite 219 route de Mansonville. Lemuel Orcutt, who died in 1850 at age 80, is buried here along with his wife, Mercy Blanchard (1779-1844), and their daughter, Freelove Orcutt [1806-1833], wife of Thomas Gilman. Freelove G. Peabody, daughter of E.S. & A. Peabody is also interred here. She died in 1858. Not much is known of the Orcutt family in Potton's history. A Mellisse C. Orcutt (1828-1910) is buried in the Owl's Head Cemetery, wife of John Magoon (1822-1913). Friendly Orcutt – a rather charming name for those days, – was an early member of the Female Benevolent Society of Potton. Friendly and Freelove seem unusually peaceable names, might they have been Quakers?
