13. PROVINCE HILL Cemetery
This well-kept little cemetery is situated on Chemin de Province Hill, near the covered bridge, Pont de la Frontière. It seems to have been created in the mid 1830’s.
The cemetery lies on land settled by pioneers from New England. Edgar Barnett characterizes it thus: “This little cemetery (…) was once the centre of a well-to-do and protestant community. It contains around 100 bodies.” Gravestones date back to the mid-1800s. Familiar names found here are: Andrew Gardyne (1792-1866), his wife Betsy McGregor (1792-1867), Nicholas Blanchard (1847-1919), his wife Amelia Santaw (1854-1921) among others.
Mr. Clarence Blanchard, an early pioneer, moved to Newport, Vermont, but returned to Province Hill for several years to cut the grass.
This historical cemetery is managed by the Mansonville Cemetery Company.
