Ce cimetière de Knowlton Landing est situé sur le chemin du Lac, près de l’Aubergine. Il est réservé à la famille Knowlton.
En 1821, Levi Knowlton (1768-1842) arrive de Templeton, au Massachusetts, et s'installe à Stukeley puis au «Landing», où le bateau-passeur accoste après avoir traversé le lac Memphrémagog à partir de Georgeville. Le hameau prendra son nom et accueillera le tout premier bureau de poste de Potton. Il meurt en 1842. Sa seconde épouse, Philena Stone, décédée en 1850, y repose ainsi que Miles E. Knowlton (1810-1882), bâtisseur du Pine Lodge, devenu l'Aubergine.
La terre où se trouve le cimetière appartient à des descendants de la famille Knowlton, qui puise ses racines chez les Loyalistes et a contribué de façon remarquable à l’histoire de Potton et à son développement
18. KNOWLTON Cemetery | Private
The Knowlton family cemetery is situated on Chemin du Lac in Knowlton Landing, beside the Aubergine.
This cemetery is named after Levi Knowlton (1768-1842), who arrived in 1821 from Templeton, Massachusetts, via Stukely. He settled at the "Landing", where a passenger boat made daily trips across Lake Memphremagog from Georgeville. The oldest marker in this private cemetery is that for the grave of Levi Knowlton, who died at the age of 73 years and 4 months on April 27, 1842. His second wife, Philena Stone (?-1850) is buried here along with Miles E. Knowlton (1810-1882), builder of the Pine Lodge, now known as l'Aubergine.
The cemetery is located on part of the original homestead acquired in 1821 by Levi Knowlton. The property remains in the Knowlton family name. The Knowlton family, with strong Loyalist roots, is an important name in the history of Potton and in its development.
